Social Studies
Social Studies in Kindergarten means learning about family and community. We begin the year by first talking about ourselves and our families. This is a good time to teach your child their birthdate, address, and phone number. As the year moves on we learn about our community. Your child should know what city, state, and country they live in. This is something you can discuss at home. Point out signs when you are driving and talk about places in the community, such as the grocery store, bank, and police & fire stations. We learn how to look at a map and draw our own maps. We also learn about jobs and how some jobs provide goods and others are a service. Needs vs. Wants is another important lesson in Kindergarten. We learn that while there are many things we want there are only a few important things we actually need. We need food/water, shelter, and clothes to survive.
