Today we read Eric Carle's "The Mixed-Up Chameleon" and discussed the important story elements. Then we took turns coming up and reading sentences from the book on sentence strips. We tracked the print by pointing to each word as we read. We noticed the repetition in the book. Then we discussed animals and came up with a bubble map of different animals. The students were then encouraged to think of animal they wished they were like. They were asked to draw a picture of themselves like that animal and write a sentence using the same story structure. They were very excited to get to work drawing their detailed pictures and writing the sentence.

We are excited to start a new author study on Eric Carle. Tomorrow we will be reading "The Mixed Up Chameleon" and thinking of what type of animal we would want to be like. We will also discuss the important story elements. I can't wait to share Eric Carle's books and see which one the class likes best.
