A Message from Ms. Maher: This week, during reading time, we read, "The 3 Little Pigs," and "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs." We had lots of fun re-telling the story of the 3 Little Pigs using felt board pieces. Then we talked about the point of view of the two stories by discussing how the characters felt. We compared how the wolf and the three little pigs felt to times that we felt and happy and sad.

We finished our second week of school and it was busy and fun! We are making new friends and learning so much. We had fun combining reading and math. We traced our name with circles and reviewed our circle song. We also looked at our names and noticed that everyone's name begins with an uppercase letter and the rest are lowercase. This is how we should practice writing our names everyday. This week during reading time we read "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". We reviewed what characters are and decided that Goldilocks, Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear are the main characters in this story. We used the felt board to retell the story. We took turns using the characters to retell the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Later we read a different version of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" and compared it to the first version we read. We discussed that both versions had the same main characters and the plots were very similar. We used the felt pieces to retell the beginning, middle, and end and then we drew and labeled the main characters from the story. We finished our study of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" by rereading the story and looking at words we didn't know. We discussed how we can use clues in the book to help us figure out the meaning of a word when we read. We looked at the word porridge in the book and we used clues to decide that porridge was like oatmeal. First we looked at the pictures in the book. Then we used the clues, such as how they were eating breakfast and it was hot. At first someone thought porridge was like ice cream but then we decided it didn't make sense because you don't eat it for breakfast and it's not hot. We created a chart to help us remember to use clues. Then we had oatmeal and created a class graph about who liked and disliked the oatmeal. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Hats! We reviewed the beginning, middle, and ending of "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and finished our hats. We had fun putting our alphabet stickers on the leaves. We got this fun idea from Mrs. Lee's Kindergarten blog. Shapes! We began looking at squares this week. We learned the song about squares: "This is a square, this is a square. How can you tell? How can you tell? It has four sides, all the same size. It's a square. It's a square" This tune is also sung to "Are You Sleeping?" We discussed how all squares have four side that are all the same size. Then we practiced making squares with our bodies. We also worked as a team to make a square using string. We discussed what it needed in order to be a square. Today we started learning about 2-D shapes. We listened to the 2-D shape song found on youtube: http://youtu.be/htcuPenTg38
You can play it at home and help review the shapes with your child. After going over the shapes we began to look more closely at the circle. We learned the circle song which is sung to the tune of "Frere Jacques - Are you sleeping?" The song goes: "This is a circle, this is a circle. How can you tell? How can you tell? It goes round and round, no end can be found. It's a circle. It's a circle" Students should understand that a circle has 1 continuous side. It goes around and it does not have any angles or vertices. Then we painted circles using marshmallows. The first week of school is already over! Our year is off to a great start and I can already tell this is going to be a wonderful year and a wonderful class! We have Started our week by beginning to learn our class routines and rules. Starting the second day of school we began picking a student of the day to learn about. It has been a lot of fun. We have had 3 students of the day so far. We will pick 3 students each week (Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) until every student has had a turn. Chester the RaccoonWe also read and reread "The Kissing Hand" this week. We discussed that books have characters and that the main characters in "The Kissing Hand" were Chester and his mom. We made our own Chester the raccoons. Chicka Chicka Boom BoomWe read and reread "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" this week too. We have been looking at the alphabet and comparing uppercase and lowercase letters. We have been looking at our names and how they are made up of letters and begin with an uppercase letter. We started to make our own "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" hats. We got this idea from Mrs. Lee's Kindergarten and it has been a lot of fun. Thanks to Mrs. Stone for drawing all the palm tree leaves for and making the tree trunk head bands for us! We will finish this project next week.
Special Student of the DayWe began our Special Student of the Day today. Every day we will pick a different student to be the Special Student of the Day. We begin by looking at the student's name and counting how many letters and syllables it has. We notice how the first letter begins an uppercase letter. Then we make a bubble map about the student. We take turns interviewing the special student and finding out about them. Then the special student leads us as we cheer their name. We then rewrite the special student's name on a sentence strip, cut it apart, and let the special student put it back together. Finally, we end by creating a book for the special student. We observe the special student and draw a picture of them, making sure to include details. We also make sure to label our drawing with their name. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!We read "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and then made our own "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom trees" out of brown paper lunch bags, foam leaves, and ABC foam stickers. It was fun! The Kissing HandWe read "The Kissing Hand" and made a special gift for our parents. We read about how Chester the raccoon was scared to go to school on the first day, but his mom kissed the palm of his hand and taught him he could put his hand to cheek and feel his mom's love all day. If your child is feeling sad or nervous you can give their palm a kiss. Don't worry, the kisses won't wash off! We also talked about emotions and how we were feeling on the first day of school. We made a bubble map of our feelings. Some of us felt happy, excited, sad, nervous, mad, and good.
